Gone Fishin'

Some people cringe at the thought of fishing but for me it is a way of life. It has always brought a sense of peace and tranquility to my life. It's my "thinking place" amongst this chaos we call life.

I started out fishing for catfish and panfish in the S.C. heat with my friends after school using nightcrawlers. Then, as a teenager I got hooked on bass fishing with artificial lures. After moving to Utah, I've learned the way of the "long rod" and have not looked back since.

Fly fishing is an art all unto itself. I guess that's why fly fishermen are labeled as "elitist" in some circles... it's not for everyone. The following photographs hope to capture the experience of a typical fly fishing excursion on a small Utah river. It is so much more than just chucking a worm on a hook, line and sinker and waiting for a bite!

Load up the truck
The drive
"The Spot"
Take in the surroundings
Unload all the gear
Worst part... getting ready
"Wonder what they're biting?"
Try a Stonefly first
Ok, let's get to it!
Fish On!

I thought of many other ideas for this project but then I remembered something Slade said... "Whatever you do make sure it's something you like" or something of that nature. So, with that, I decided to tell a story of a fishing trip! This was a fun project to do and as a result I think I want to start up a fishing trip blog and document all of my future excursions. It's not going to be easy, as I learned on this trip, but I think it all paid off in the end.

Assignment #4 - Color Theory

Complementary
Analogous
Monochromatic
This assignment was really exciting, fun, difficult and frustrating, all at the same time. It was really hard to look for color schemes that would work for each scenario. I often found myself forgetting about the color aspect of the assignment when I would be out on photo shoot outings. I would get to caught up in trying to find a good subject/composition/story that I couldn't force myself to think about color too! Good thing I started this assignment really early! I had almost 500 photos to choose from, which helped guarantee I would have something that would work for the assignment. Turns out I had had more than enough that would work and trying to decide which 3 to use was the hardest part of all... which I guess isn't so bad.

Things that I learned:
- shooting in a snow storm is fun only if you have fingerless gloves
- shooting flippy floppy fish is extremely difficult and frustrating
- take a ton of photos and make sure to bracket
- good excuse to go on a fishing trip ;)

Assignment #3 - High Key/Low Key

Learned a good bit from this assignment. For one thing I learned what high key and low key shots really are. I've heard the terms thrown around before but thought it just meant that it was either an overexposed or underexposed shot taken on purpose. Now I know that it's the actual objects that are white on white or black on black.

Another thing I learned is how hard it is to find good light or to make your own. Lots of experimenting on that subject in the foreseeable future, furshurrrr!
